Many women have to make a big decision at some point during their reproductive years. While some women may have as many children as nature will allow, others decide that they need to undergo female sterilization in order to prevent future pregnancies. Most women opt to have their tubes tied if they no longer wish to have children. However, many women don’t consider the possible tubal ligation side effects that may occur after having this procedure.

Tubal ligation should be considered a permanent form of birth control. It is possible to have a reversal done if a woman decides that she does want to have additional children. While the procedure does exist, there is not a 100% success rate with it so it is important that a woman not undergo tubal ligation unless she is quite sure that she doesn’t want additional children.

The great thing about a tubal ligation is that there is no daily pill that has to be taken to prevent pregnancy. It allows the woman to feel like she can move on with her life and not have to worry about any surprises. The procedure is fairly easy to have done, although it is major surgery if one does not count the new Adiana and Essure systems, and will be immediately effective for most women (Adiana and Essure are not effective immediately).

One of the real possible tubal ligation side effects is what happens with a very small number of women. These women actually can have their tubes grow back together and end up with a very big surprise in the form of a positive pregnancy test.

Furthermore, women must remember that tubal ligation does not prevent any sexually transmitted diseases. Therefore, it’s important that she still takes the necessary precautions when having unprotected sex with someone she is not sure about.

Tubal ligation is more complicated than male sterilization and has more risks associated with the surgery itself. Tubal ligation side effects due to this surgery can include many things such as infection, possible nerve damage and problems with anesthesia during the procedure itself. A woman should talk with your doctor at length before agreeing to have the procedure so that she understands every possible side effect and danger to having it done.

Additionally, your doctor probably won’t tell you about post tubal ligation syndrome. This is a collection of symptoms that women can have following their tube tying surgery. Some doctors do believe it is caused by hormonal changes due to the surgery since the reproductive system has been compromised by the surgery. Others believe it is caused by an atrophy of the organs due to damage to the blood system surrounding the reproductive system.

Whatever causes it, this set of tubal ligation side effects can make life miserable for the women involved. In fact it can affect the whole family as the women can become bedridden or housebound during certain times of the month in the more pronounced cases. You can see how the mood swings, menopausal symptoms, headaches, and a long list of other symptoms that make up these tubal ligation side effects are things you may not have heard about until you start to suffer them yourself, if you do.

Each year, many women consider the option of female sterilization. Normally, this includes the idea of having tubal ligation surgery. Commonly known as having their tubes tied, this is a very typical surgery for a woman to undergo just after having her last child. For many women, there is no regret about having her tubes tied. However some women may come to regret that decision later in life.

The reasons why a woman would undergo tubal ligation surgery are numerous. Sometimes it is simply because the couple has decided that they are finished having children and this is a good way to prevent future pregnancies. However, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that cause a woman to choose to have her tubes tied.

For example, if a woman is in a relationship which is not stable or is abusive in some way, she may opt to have this procedure in order to avoid bringing a child into the situation. Some women make a decision early in their lives that they don’t want to have any children at all, so they may have their tubes tied to prevent this from occurring. These women and their spouses may feel it is important to not bring any more children into a chaotic world.

There are certain women who experience heavy bleeding each month during their menstrual cycle. This is called menorrhagia and may need to be handled medically by having procedures such as an endometrial ablation. When a woman has this procedure done, the doctor removes the lining of the uterus which does not allow her to have heavy periods any longer.

Some women, depending upon the age they are when they have the ablation procedure done, will resume their menstrual cycle at some point. This does not necessarily mean she is capable of carrying a fetus to term because much of the lining of the uterus was removed. This is why many doctors most often recommend that a woman have tubal ligation surgery to prevent the chance of becoming pregnant since it puts her and the baby at higher risk.

Deciding whether or not to have tubal ligation surgery is certainly not an easy thing for any woman. This is because she must make future plans and decide whether or not she will have any additional children. For some women, that can be a hard decision to make.

For most people, the issue of birth control revolves around things like condoms, diaphragms, and birth control pills. These are all known methods for preventing conception during sexual intercourse, but they are also temporary. In other words, if a couple ever wants to actually produce children, then all that needs to be done is to stop using their preferred form of birth control. However, for those people who are adamant in not wanting children, doing this can seem mildly impractical. Thus, the existence of more permanent forms of birth control are in place, even if they are usually irreversible. Of course, by their very nature, these forms of contraception are best taken only after serious consideration.

First and foremost, lies the keyword in the description: irreversible. There are circumstances and procedural variations that result in them being reversible, but for the most part, they’re called “permanent” birth control for a very good reason. The two most common procedures for this, tubal ligation for women and vasectomy for men, are both done surgically. These methods are not particularly invasive, but they often require cutting certain tubes in the body. The tubes differ in both males and females, but the basic concept is to prevent the sperm or egg cells from reaching their respective destinations in the body, thus cutting off the possibility of conception. These procedures are permanent and irreversible, so unless a person is absolutely certain they do not wish to have children, then this option should not be considered.

There are also potential consequences to both procedures outside of the realm of birth control. While the statistics have varied on both counts for both genders, there are reports that both tubal ligation and vasectomy can have an effect on female and male libido, respectively. In theory, this should not be the case, because neither procedure is known to have an effect on hormonal levels or anything that might have a physiological effect on a person’s sex drive. The effect, conforming to expectations, is a negative one, though most statistics that do show a decline (most report no noticeable change) reflect only a slight adjustment, with only extreme circumstances showing a decline of over 10%. Still, it should be noted that these statistics are highly subjective, and what is only a slight decline in some might constitute a complete loss of libido in others.

One final consideration should be which one of the couple gets the procedure. Both forms are invasive and may pose complications. Also, there might be some personal objections that have to be considered. This sort of thing can be very subjective and not all objections are going to be firmly in the realm of the medical and the reasonable. While some might describe apprehensions to getting tubal ligation or vasectomy to be irrational fears, it should be recalled that what is defined as “irrational” to some might prove to be perfectly reasonable for the person making the argument.

Once all considerations have been weighed, then the only thing left is to consult a medical professional on the matter. Yes, the procedure is permanent, but there are ways to make sure that there are ways for a couple to conceive a child even after the “snipping.” For example, it is now possible to flash-freeze sperm, making sure that the couple can still use artificial insemination. Also, a medical professional is going to have better knowledge on whether or not a reversible procedure is advisable, given a couple’s specific circumstances.

There are millions of women who are unable to have children because their fallopian tubes are blocked. The reason for having blocked tubes will vary. Usually the biological reason is due to each woman getting some type of infection such as pelvic inflammatory disease or salpingitis.

As well as infections being the cause of a woman’s fallopian tubes becoming blocked, some women will intentionally have them blocked as well. This is a man-made reason. On average, in the USA each year, thousands of women have a procedure known as tubal ligation so that they cannot have any children.

It does not matter what the reason is for the blocked tubes what it means is that the chances of a woman having a child naturally are greatly reduced. However, what has caused the blocked tubes can be rectified by various procedures. There are three different surgical procedures that can be used by surgeons today for treating this type of medical condition and below we look briefly at what these are.

1. Tubal Reanastomosis (Tubal Ligation Reversal)

This is a micro-surgical procedure used to remove the scarred part of the blocked tubes in order to allow reconnection of the fallopian tubes. Usually this method of tubal reanastomosis is used by a tubal surgeon to repair the tubes and restore fertility to a woman who had a tubal ligation. Yes, women who get their tubes tied change their minds or they simply want to be rid of the side effects of tubal ligation called post tubal ligation syndrome.

However, this same basic procedure of reanastomosis can be used to also remove the bad sections of the fallopian tubes caused by infection or mechanical defect and then to suture the remaining healthy portions of the tubes back together again. When healing is complete, this will restore the passage within the tubes which the egg travels down upon release from the ovary. It is important not just for the travel but also because the egg is fertilized by the sperm within the fallopian tube and develops on its journey.

2. Tubouterine Implantation or Tubal Implantation

Sometimes the damage done by infection or tubal ligation is nearest to the uterus requiring the removal of the tubes in this area. Surgeons carry out this procedure to repair blocked tubes when only the distal segment of the fallopian tubes is available. What the surgeon does is to create an opening through the uterine wall so that then the remaining part of the fallopian tubes can be inserted into the uterine cavity. Once done, the tubes are sutured into place creating a new pathway into the uterus for the egg and sperm to travel. A surgeon will only recommend this surgery to a woman for treating blocked tubes when he cannot carry out a tubal reanastomosis because there just isn’t enough tube left close to or at the uterus.

One form of tying tubes that can be reversed by this method is the Essure device. As this device partially sticks out into the uterus as well as part being in the tubes causing scarring in this area to block the fallopian tubes, this needs to be removed. Once removed, the only option is a clean tube to uterus implant which is what this procedure does.

3. Salpingostomy

This surgery, salpingostomy, can be used for the treatment of blocked fallopian tubes; however it also used when a woman loses a fallopian tube to an ectopic pregnancy. When an ectopic pregnancy is detected, usually too late, the fallopian tube where the fetus is developing usually is partially or totally removed.

Likewise, there are methods of tubal ligation such as a fimbriectomy which will remove the fimbrial end of the fallopian tubes. This is the end nearest the ovaries which looks something like the fallopian tubes ending in fingers. These fingers have cilia which capture the egg as it is released and sends it down the fallopian tube.

If there is enough tube remaining from an ectopic pregnancy removal, after removal of damaged tube from an infection or in the case of a fimbriectomy, this is how a tubal surgeon will proceed. He makes a small incision into the end of the tubes and this results in a new opening being created. Once the new opening for the blocked tubes has been made, the tissue is then folded over exposing the cilia on the inner layer of the tubes. The new hole that has been made is what now replaces the original opening in the fallopian tubes and the cilia take the place of the fingers of cilia of the old fimbrial ends. So of course now the eggs following their release from the ovaries can pass through the uterus without any problems and then be fertilized by the man’s sperm.

That is a quick explanation of three surgical methods of repairing blocked tubes. As most tubal blockage, whether unintentionally caused or intentionally caused, simply requires the removal of scarred tissue and then splicing the tubes back together, most often tubal reanastomosis will be used as the surgical alternative. However, it is good to know that other forms of surgery can repair blocked tubes as well.

A lot of women have their tubes tied every year in order to refrain from having any more children. In 1995, the CDC determined that over 15 million women in the age group of women from 15 – 44 had done this in order to provide for birth control. What might surprise you though is how many women want to reverse the procedure and have a pregnancy after tubal ligation.

That figure is again from the CDC study. In the CREST study, it was determined that almost 25% of those women wanted their tubes untied. This might be a surprising number to many who think of having your tubes tied as a permanent form of birth control. What could cause so many women to rethink their previous decision?

What it all boils down to is guilt and regret usually caused by some type of change in life situation. With a change in husbands or significant other, a woman might regret having been sterilized. She and her new partner decide they want a child so she decides she wants a reversal. For other women, it could be a change of heart due to religious convictions, change due to financial improvements, or even due to the horrible untimely death of a child.

However, there are options to have the procedure reversed and to have another pregnancy after tubal ligation whatever the reason for the change of heart. Some may argue it, but the results of two other studies (or report as one calls itself) in comparison show that tubal ligation reversal surgery is the best option for women who want the best success rate and the less expensive option.

This is a surgical procedure that is done one time for the vast majority of women unlike the alternative. During the operation, the surgeon will look at the tied tubes to see where the blockage is located. He will then proceed to remove this blockage and, depending upon the surgeon, use a stent to see if the resulting segments are then unblocked. If so, the segments are sutured together in order to make one complete pathway from each ovary to the uterus.

As this procedure is less expensive on average than the other alternative, this makes it the option most women should seek out. It is not only less expensive, it has a higher success rate over time as well and, as previously pointed out, it is not a procedure that has to done over and over costing you an additional fee each time you try for a successful pregnancy.

There are other places than your local hospital you can go to have a tubal reversal. In fact, I highly suggest looking into Dr. Gary Berger and the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as tubal reversals are all that is done there.

You will probably find that the cost, even with transportation and hotel, is less than a local doctor would charge anyway. Besides, Dr. B has been doing this for years and is very experienced at it. Do you want someone who occasionally does a TR or one who does it every day of the week?

Many times women have their tubes tied after having what they believe to be their last child. Due to life circumstances changing, such as a second marriage, many women later realize that they are not finished having children after all. When this happens, the question of having a tubal ligation reversal often comes up. The question that follows is often what are the chances of getting pregnant after this reversal procedure?

After a recent 8 year study on this particular topic, researchers have found that the success rate of the tubal ligation reversal procedure depends on three major factors. The first factor is the age of the patient at the time of the procedure being reversed. Just as with the general population, the rate of miscarriage increases with age.

The second factor that played a large role in the chances of getting pregnant was the method used in the original tubal ligation. For women who have had their tubes tied using tubal clips, there was a 75% chance that they would have a successful chance of getting pregnant after reversal surgery. For those who had a tubal ligation using tubal rings, there was a 72% chance of successfully getting pregnant.

As for other types of sterilization, the rates went down for women who had a resection or coagulation during their original surgery. Researchers believe this is because using the clip or the ring method only causes minimal damage to the fallopian tubes which is easier to repair and which leaves longer tubes which leads to our third factor.

The third factor that determines whether a woman will have better chances of getting pregnant after a tubal ligation reversal procedure is how long her tubes are. Depending on how the doctor handled the original tubal surgery, a woman may have tubes ranging in length from 7 1/2 cm to less than two and half centimeters.

The longer the tubes, the better the chances are for a woman to get pregnant. For example, women who had an average fallopian tube length 7 1/2 cm or longer have a 77% chance of getting pregnant. For women who had shorter tubal lengths of less than 2.5 cm, the rate of pregnancy decreased but was still a respectable 38%.

In fact, the doctors collecting the data for this study became aware that getting pregnant with one tube and even as short as 1 cm can still happen. This should lead to the conclusion that any woman wanting a tubal ligation reversal will find her chances of getting pregnant are good although they may vary greatly depending upon the above factors.
