Vasectomy, also known as male sterilization, minor surgical procedure performed on males to permanently prevent them from conceiving a child (see Birth Control). In the operation, each of the two vas deferens (ducts that carry sperm from the testes to the urethra) is blocked in order to prevent sperm from mixing with the semen produced by the male during ejaculation.

Vasectomies are more than 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, and they are a popular, safe form of permanent birth control. In the United States, 7 percent of women aged 15 to 44 who use contraception rely on the sterilization of their male partner to prevent pregnancy.

A relatively simple procedure, a vasectomy requires only local anesthesia and can be performed in a physician’s office or outpatient clinic. A physician makes a small incision in the scrotum, the external pouch of skin that holds each testis. Each vas deferens is pulled through the incision and the physician cuts and seals the ends of the ducts. Each vas deferens is then put back in place and the incision is closed.

After a vasectomy, the scrotum may be swollen and sore for about three days. Generally, most men are able to return to work in one to two days. Occasionally, however, complications may develop from the operation, including an infection or swelling in the area of the incision, bleeding under the skin, and leakage of sperm into the tissues surrounding the vas deferens.

Because some sperm may have been in the tubes beyond the point at which they were cut, a vasectomy is not immediately effective. It takes about three months for all sperm to completely disappear from the semen. Until the vasectomy takes effect, a couple must use another method of birth control to prevent pregnancy. A vasectomy does not affect a man’s ability to have an erection and ejaculate. The testes continue to produce sperm after a vasectomy, which are simply reabsorbed by the body.

Vasectomy has become increasingly popular in both the United States and Canada. It is also well accepted in many other countries. Nevertheless, vasectomy is still met with suspicion or legal sanctions in some countries, and some religious groups oppose it on the same grounds they oppose all other methods of contraception.

Very rarely, an individual may request a vasectomy reversal. This can often be accomplished surgically, but fertility is restored in only about half of all cases. In general, vasectomy should be considered permanent and irreversible.

Hey Doc, Is My Vasectomy Reversible?

One of the greatest medical misconceptions is that a vasectomy is a permanent physical alteration. In reality, a vasectomy is reversible. The procedure is a delicate one, but it is possible.

How is a Vasectomy Reversible?

When a man undergoes a vasectomy, the vas deferens (the tubes that deliver sperm) are either cut or blocked. When a vasectomy reversal is performed, the physician must perform a microsurgery to reattach the cut ends so the flow of sperm can begin again. This is accomplished through one of two procedures – a vasovasostomy or an epididmovasostomy.

Vasovasostomy is the more common of the two procedures and it accomplished by surgically reconnecting the two cut ends of the vans deferens back together. An epididmovasostomy on the other hand is a much more complex procedure that has to be performed when scarring, inflammation or chronic congestion prevents the sperm from entering the vans deferens. In this procedure, the physician must surgically connect the vans deferens directly to the epididymis, the tube that runs behind the testis.

Why Would Anyone Want a Vasectomy Reversed?

People change their minds. Sometimes, one’s life may take a change, such as a divorcee marrying a woman who wants to have children or a couple realizing that they do want to raise a family after all. Regardless of the reason, between six and twelve percent of vasectomized men choose to have their procedure reversed.

It’s important to know that men’s bodies continue to produce sperm even after a vasectomy is performed. Because the sperm are unable to pass through to join the seminal fluid due to the vasectomy, they build up, eventually break down and get harmlessly reabsorbed by the body.

How Successful are Reversible Vasectomy Procedures?

With improved microsurgical techniques, reversed vasectomies have become not only more popular, but more effective. Even still, there is no guarantee that a Vasectomy Reversal will result in pregnancy. Studies indicate that sperm recovery occurs successfully in up to 90 percent of vasectomy reversal patients, and of those patients, approximately 50 percent achieve pregnancy.

Are Vasectomy Reversals Covered by Insurance?

Every healthcare insurance provider is different, but most do not cover the vasectomy reversal procedure since it is considered an elective surgery. Of course, before making your decision, be sure to check with your insurance company to learn if that is the case with your policy. If you discover that your insurance company will not cover the cost of the procedure, most physicians offer financing options to help you manage the cost of the vasectomy reversal.

Before making the decision to reverse a vasectomy, you should learn as much about the procedures as possible and those who perform them. Visit VasectomyReversalUSA.com today or call 714-REVERSE (714.738.3773) and get all of the information you need to make an educated decision.

Visit www.VasectomyReversalUSA.com today or call 714-REVERSE (714.738.3773) and get all of the information you need to make an educated decision.
