Many women have to make a big decision at some point during their reproductive years. While some women may have as many children as nature will allow, others decide that they need to undergo female sterilization in order to prevent future pregnancies. Most women opt to have their tubes tied if they no longer wish to have children. However, many women don’t consider the possible tubal ligation side effects that may occur after having this procedure.

Tubal ligation should be considered a permanent form of birth control. It is possible to have a reversal done if a woman decides that she does want to have additional children. While the procedure does exist, there is not a 100% success rate with it so it is important that a woman not undergo tubal ligation unless she is quite sure that she doesn’t want additional children.

The great thing about a tubal ligation is that there is no daily pill that has to be taken to prevent pregnancy. It allows the woman to feel like she can move on with her life and not have to worry about any surprises. The procedure is fairly easy to have done, although it is major surgery if one does not count the new Adiana and Essure systems, and will be immediately effective for most women (Adiana and Essure are not effective immediately).

One of the real possible tubal ligation side effects is what happens with a very small number of women. These women actually can have their tubes grow back together and end up with a very big surprise in the form of a positive pregnancy test.

Furthermore, women must remember that tubal ligation does not prevent any sexually transmitted diseases. Therefore, it’s important that she still takes the necessary precautions when having unprotected sex with someone she is not sure about.

Tubal ligation is more complicated than male sterilization and has more risks associated with the surgery itself. Tubal ligation side effects due to this surgery can include many things such as infection, possible nerve damage and problems with anesthesia during the procedure itself. A woman should talk with your doctor at length before agreeing to have the procedure so that she understands every possible side effect and danger to having it done.

Additionally, your doctor probably won’t tell you about post tubal ligation syndrome. This is a collection of symptoms that women can have following their tube tying surgery. Some doctors do believe it is caused by hormonal changes due to the surgery since the reproductive system has been compromised by the surgery. Others believe it is caused by an atrophy of the organs due to damage to the blood system surrounding the reproductive system.

Whatever causes it, this set of tubal ligation side effects can make life miserable for the women involved. In fact it can affect the whole family as the women can become bedridden or housebound during certain times of the month in the more pronounced cases. You can see how the mood swings, menopausal symptoms, headaches, and a long list of other symptoms that make up these tubal ligation side effects are things you may not have heard about until you start to suffer them yourself, if you do.

If you are considering having tubal ligation surgery, you need to learn more about Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome (ptls). While we don’t really know what percentage of women suffer from this problem, figures available online vary from 2% all the way up to 35%. That’s because the medical community as a whole doesn’t think ptls is a real side effect of tubal ligation and studies on the problem are very limited. But then, just a few years back, they didn’t think chronic fatigue syndrome was real either. Whatever the real number of women suffering from the symptoms, it’s important that you learn what you can in order to make the best decision for you whether having this surgery is right or not.

The symptoms associated with PTLS are varied. Search online and you will find a long list of possible symptoms but some of the tubal ligation side effects are increased bleeding to the point of flooding when menstruating and increased cramps so painful the sufferer cannot get out of bed. Also you may find that menstrual cycles are irregular or do not happen at all. Other symptoms can include but are not limited to irritability and mood swings, hot flashes and night sweats, memory lapses, aching joints, depression, weight gain, and pelvic pain.

Some theorize that the problems are caused by lowered hormone levels due to the blood supply to the ovaries being damaged. Others point at the problems being due to too much of one hormone and not enough of another. Yet another is that the target cells in the fallopian tubes which relay hormonal messages are damaged or eliminated during the tubal ligation surgery. The fact is it is just unknown why this happens to some women and not to others.

Something else that you should be made aware of is that if the ovaries no longer function in the normal way due to whatever reason following the surgery, the production of hormones which protects you against heart disease and osteoporosis ceases. Generally you may end up having all the symptoms and complaints of menopause long before your time. Furthermore, you should be aware that many, many women who have their tubes tied later end up with a hysterectomy as a way of combating all the problems tubal ligation may cause. Might as well only have that surgery but then it brings its own set of problems which you should research as they are beyond the scope of this article.

The only way that PTLS can be effectively treated is through undergoing the procedure known as tubal ligation reversal. This procedure results in the fallopian tubes being surgically connected again. Even if you really don’t want another baby which this surgery could make possible it may be your only real hope for removing the pain and suffering of ptls.

Many times women have their tubes tied after having what they believe to be their last child. Due to life circumstances changing, such as a second marriage, many women later realize that they are not finished having children after all. When this happens, the question of having a tubal ligation reversal often comes up. The question that follows is often what are the chances of getting pregnant after this reversal procedure?

After a recent 8 year study on this particular topic, researchers have found that the success rate of the tubal ligation reversal procedure depends on three major factors. The first factor is the age of the patient at the time of the procedure being reversed. Just as with the general population, the rate of miscarriage increases with age.

The second factor that played a large role in the chances of getting pregnant was the method used in the original tubal ligation. For women who have had their tubes tied using tubal clips, there was a 75% chance that they would have a successful chance of getting pregnant after reversal surgery. For those who had a tubal ligation using tubal rings, there was a 72% chance of successfully getting pregnant.

As for other types of sterilization, the rates went down for women who had a resection or coagulation during their original surgery. Researchers believe this is because using the clip or the ring method only causes minimal damage to the fallopian tubes which is easier to repair and which leaves longer tubes which leads to our third factor.

The third factor that determines whether a woman will have better chances of getting pregnant after a tubal ligation reversal procedure is how long her tubes are. Depending on how the doctor handled the original tubal surgery, a woman may have tubes ranging in length from 7 1/2 cm to less than two and half centimeters.

The longer the tubes, the better the chances are for a woman to get pregnant. For example, women who had an average fallopian tube length 7 1/2 cm or longer have a 77% chance of getting pregnant. For women who had shorter tubal lengths of less than 2.5 cm, the rate of pregnancy decreased but was still a respectable 38%.

In fact, the doctors collecting the data for this study became aware that getting pregnant with one tube and even as short as 1 cm can still happen. This should lead to the conclusion that any woman wanting a tubal ligation reversal will find her chances of getting pregnant are good although they may vary greatly depending upon the above factors.
