The Pros And Cons Of The Vasectomy

Most couples at some point in their lives are faced with the issue of contraception. Once you have the number of children you’d planned on having, you sit back and think of how to take the worry of an unplanned pregnancy out of tomorrow’s picture. True, there are contraceptive measures that you can take that do not involve any procedure done on your bodies. Like the pill or the condom or diaphragm. But we all know the failure rate associated with these, not to mention the fact that you need to remember to take them or put them on. It tends to take away from the spontaneity of sex. So that brings the choice down to: you or her?

Since sterilization of the man and woman is fairly permanent, both should sit down and discuss the issue as it is a lifelong one and not to be taken lightly. It would be ideal to get your family doctor in on the discussions too. The main topic would be whether or not you want any more children. Once that issue is settled, then the “you or me” one can be gone in to.

What the woman will have to undergo is called tubal ligation. Here, the fallopian tubes which carry the female eggs from the ovaries to the uterus are tied off so the eggs cannot pass through them anymore. This involves general anesthesia though it is minor surgery, and maybe a few risks later. But it is permanent and almost irreversible.

Male sterilization is the male equivalent of the female one. Here, too, the male sperm is blocked off from reaching the semen. It involves only a local anesthetic and there are just two holes punctured in the scrotum. Through this, the tubes are lifted out and cauterized. It could also be done surgically where two small cuts are made and the section in between taken out, after which it is stitched up. This wound takes a few days to heal and you could experience a bit of soreness and discomfort for a few days. There can be no intercourse till the stitches are removed. Even after this, for at least two months, another method of contraception like the condom will have to be used because there might be some sperm still in the system. Sometimes, it can take longer before the sperm is flushed out. You will probably have to get a test done and only after it has been declared safe can you stop using any other method of contraception.

Most men do not consider vasectomy before they reach their middle age. It is necessary for a man to know all the pros and cons before he makes this decision. There have been cases where the procedure has been reversed but this is rare and expensive. It would be much better to spend time debating and considering before this step is taken.

The great news is that sex after a vasectomy is much more fun because it is carefree and without the worry of pregnancy. It takes such a little time to get it done – less than half an hour and the discomfort after that is minimal so if you are sure about not wanting any more children, vasectomy would be the right decision to take.

Just a Snip! Does The Word ‘Vasectomy’ Make Your Partner Cross His Legs Uncomfortably? Read on for a Quick Q & A…

Crossing his legs and running for cover could simply mean that your partner is uniformed about the vasectomy procedure. Before making the decision, both partners should be educated in what the procedure involves and you will then be able to make your decision with greater confidence.

The following questions and answers are commonly asked by others so compare this list with your concerns, and if still not sure, discuss with your doctor.

1. Basically, what is a Vasectomy?

In reality, it’s a very simple 20 minute operation that leaves a man unable to father children. It involves cutting the two tubes, called vas deferens, which run from the testes to the urethra. Simply explained, this ‘cut’, in the two tubes, prevents the sperm from reaching the semen. Although the man continues to have sexual intercourse and climax as before, as explained, his semen does not contain sperm and he cannot father a child after the vasectomy.

2. How Is It Done?

A Vasectomy is a simple procedure normally carried out in a day clinic, using a local anesthetic. A small incision is made in the upper part of the scrotum under the penis. The vas deferens are ‘tied’ off and then cut apart. Depending on the size of the incision, it may require some stitching.

3. Are There Any Complications?

Yes, as in any surgical procedure, there could be complications and you should discuss this with your Doctor. However, having made that point, a vasectomy ranks among the safest surgical procedures. You will experience some minor bruising and discomfort (often described as a dull ache) but recovery takes only a few days.

4. How Soon Afterwards is it Effective? (Meaning “How soon Can I have Sex?)

The operation IS NOT effective immediately. After the operation, general thought is that it can take 16-20 ejaculations to expel all the stored sperm, before a man can be declared infertile. Better safe that sorry! Men are able to resume a normal sex life as soon as they wake up from the operation, if they wish, but additional contraceptive measures are advisable for the first few weeks. Above all, bear in mind, that a vasectomy does not mean that a man has to abstain from sex for any period of time, and that it also DOES NOT have any impact on your ability to get or sustain an erection.

5. Can a Vasectomy be Reversed?

You should consider a vasectomy to be permanent. If there’s any doubt, or if you think you might need your fertility again at a later stage, then this procedure is not for you. There are delicate microsurgery operations that are quite complicated, that may be able to reverse the effects of the vasectomy, but there is no guarantee that the flow of sperm can be restored. It is therefore best to assume that the procedure will be permanent.

6. What is the cost of a Vasectomy?

This can range from 0 to 00, but this cost is covered under many health insurance programs. Check if the cost is provided under the benefits of your coverage. It is worth noting, that the cost is significantly lower than the cost of sterilization for women.

Once you have made a decision whether or not to have the vasectomy, please take a little time to consider the importance of looking after your prostrate. A total of approximately 10 million American men suffer with prostrate problems and I would therefore strongly advise that you start taking a supplement to ensure the health of your prostrate. Please CLICK ON THIS LINK and consider the Prosta Rx capsules which will provide a broad spectrum of nutritional support, or the Ultra Saw Palmetto & Pygeum Capsules if you are suffering with low libido and sexual stamina. Do remember that the sooner you start looking after your prostrate health, the longer you will stay healthy and sexually active – Good Health Naturally

I have been involved in the Herbal/Natural healing industry for the past 20 years. I have owned my own manufacturing factory plus retail outlets. I have also been responsible for the formulations of all the products I produced and sold. I am passionate about natural healing and firmly believe we should all “treat the cause and not just the symptoms”. During this time I also became very involved in counselling couples with troubled relationships – I found that I could really relate to these people.

In my spare time I am an avid sportsperson having represented my country in swimming and cycling in the veterans catergories.

Vasectomy, also known as male sterilization, minor surgical procedure performed on males to permanently prevent them from conceiving a child (see Birth Control). In the operation, each of the two vas deferens (ducts that carry sperm from the testes to the urethra) is blocked in order to prevent sperm from mixing with the semen produced by the male during ejaculation.

Vasectomies are more than 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, and they are a popular, safe form of permanent birth control. In the United States, 7 percent of women aged 15 to 44 who use contraception rely on the sterilization of their male partner to prevent pregnancy.

A relatively simple procedure, a vasectomy requires only local anesthesia and can be performed in a physician’s office or outpatient clinic. A physician makes a small incision in the scrotum, the external pouch of skin that holds each testis. Each vas deferens is pulled through the incision and the physician cuts and seals the ends of the ducts. Each vas deferens is then put back in place and the incision is closed.

After a vasectomy, the scrotum may be swollen and sore for about three days. Generally, most men are able to return to work in one to two days. Occasionally, however, complications may develop from the operation, including an infection or swelling in the area of the incision, bleeding under the skin, and leakage of sperm into the tissues surrounding the vas deferens.

Because some sperm may have been in the tubes beyond the point at which they were cut, a vasectomy is not immediately effective. It takes about three months for all sperm to completely disappear from the semen. Until the vasectomy takes effect, a couple must use another method of birth control to prevent pregnancy. A vasectomy does not affect a man’s ability to have an erection and ejaculate. The testes continue to produce sperm after a vasectomy, which are simply reabsorbed by the body.

Vasectomy has become increasingly popular in both the United States and Canada. It is also well accepted in many other countries. Nevertheless, vasectomy is still met with suspicion or legal sanctions in some countries, and some religious groups oppose it on the same grounds they oppose all other methods of contraception.

Very rarely, an individual may request a vasectomy reversal. This can often be accomplished surgically, but fertility is restored in only about half of all cases. In general, vasectomy should be considered permanent and irreversible.

 Vasectomy Surgery Treatment In India

A vasectomy or ‘male sterilisation’ is a simple and reliable method of contraception. It is usually considered a permanent form of contraception, although in some cases the procedure can be reversed, if necessary, e.g. if you decide to have children later on in life………

How does a vasectomy work?

It works by preventing sperm from reaching the semen that is ejaculated from the man’s penis during sex. It is a quick and painless surgical procedure, usually carried out under local anaesthetic. In most cases, you will be able to return home the same day as your procedure.

A vasectomy has no effect on your sex drive or ability to enjoy sex. You will still have erections and ejaculate normally. The only difference is that the semen you ejaculate will not contain sperm……..

What are the benefits?

A vasectomy may be appropriate when a couple do not want any more children, or have decided not to have any at all. It may be chosen as a simpler and more reliable alternative to female sterilisation.

A vasectomy is normally permanent, so once it has been carried out successfully and semen tests have shown there is no sperm present, long-term partners may not need to use other forms of contraception……….

Recovering from a vasectomy

Following a vasectomy, you will normally experience some mild discomfort, swelling and bruising of your scrotum. This will usually last for a few days.

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort, you can take paracetamol or ibuprofen. However, ibuprofen is not suitable if you have asthma, a history of stomach ulcers, or kidney or liver problems. Contact your doctor for advice if you are still experiencing considerable pain after taking painkillers………

Is reversal possible?

It is possible to have a vasectomy reversed, but the procedure is often unsuccessful. You have a better chance of a successful reversal if it’s done soon after the vasectomy…………….

Vasectomy Reversal Alternatives

You’ve had a vasectomy, and now you’ve come to regret the decision. Maybe you’ve finally met the woman of your dreams, and you desperately want to have children with her. Or maybe your life perspective has just changed, or any of thousand other reasons you might wish you had all your plumbing intact. But no matter what your reason is, you’re not looking forward to having another operation down there.

While a vasectomy is allegedly a simple operation, it still has risks and even beyond the risks, any operation on such a sensitive area is going to be unpleasant and most men don’t want to do it twice. This is completely understandable, and thankfully, there are vasectomy reversal alternatives for guys who don’t want to go under the knife again.

The easiest option is to have banked your sperm prior to having had your vasectomy. Sperm stays viable when frozen for years, so if you were planning ahead, this is probably one of the easiest vasectomy reversal alternatives. The obvious drawback is that you had to have done it before you had the vasectomy. Unless you were regularly donating sperm before you had the operation, this isn’t going to be helpful. If you did, though, this should be the first thing you look at.

If you’re just interested in having a child, you can also use donor sperm. You can either use the sperm of someone you know or you can go to a sperm bank and select the attributes you’re looking for in a sperm donor. This isn’t likely to be an appealing option for many, but it is an option.

Once you move past those two options, you’re going to be looking at medical techniques that involve extracting the sperm, either with a needle or a small surgical incision. In either case, they go into the scrotum and extract sperm directly which will then be used to inseminate the mother.

This is a lot invasive than getting the vasectomy reversed, and you can have enough sperm extracted for multiple pregnancies. The other benefit is that by using in vitro fertilization, you have a much better chance of achieving conception. As alternatives go, these make for a fairly attractive option.

Realistically if you’ve had a vasectomy and want to have a kid, you’re going to have to endure a certain amount of discomfort. What you need to decide is which of the vasectomy reversal alternatives will work for you.

Vasectomy Reversal India

Vasectomy reversal is a surgery to undo a vasectomy. After successful vasectomy reversal, sperm are present in your semen again and you may be able to get your partner pregnant. A more complicated surgery than vasectomy, vasectomy reversal re-connects the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles into the semen. Vasectomy reversal can be attempted even if a long time has passed since you had your vasectomy. However, only about half of vasectomy reversals are successful….

Why it’s done

Men decide to have the surgery to restore fertility for a number of reasons, including loss of a child, remarriage or improved finances making it feasible to raise a child. A small number of men have a vasectomy reversal to treat testicular pain….

During the procedure

You may receive general anesthetics to make you unconscious during the surgery. Or, your surgeon may use an epidural, spinal or local anesthetic. In any case, your anesthesia will need to keep you completely still because the surgery is so delicate. It’s done using a microscope that magnifies the surgery area….

After surgery

Immediately after surgery, your doctor may cover the incisions with bandages. You’ll put on your jockstrap to hold any bandages in place and apply pressure to reduce swelling and movement. You’ll need to rest with an ice pack placed on your scrotum to reduce swelling. As the anesthetic wears off, you may have some pain and cramping that can be relieved with a painkiller, such as acetaminophen. For most men, the pain isn’t severe and gets better after a few days to a week….

What you can expect

A vasectomy reversal reconnects the severed vas deferens, the tube that carries sperm from each testicle. One of two surgical procedures may be used to reverse a vasectomy. A vasovasostomy reattaches the severed ends of the vas deferens to one another. A vasoepididymostomy attaches the vas deferens directly to the epididymis, the coiled tube on the testicle where sperm matures. The point where the vas deferens is reattached is called an anastomosis….

Results of Vasectomy Reversal Procedure

You can resume sexual intercourse once the incisions are healed — usually a few weeks after surgery. If a vasectomy reversal is successful, sperm usually appear in the semen after a few months, but can take as long as 15 months with some procedures. Vasectomy reversal leads to pregnancy in about half of couples within two years….

Â

Vasectomy reversal is a surgery to undo a vasectomy. After successful vasectomy reversal, sperm are present in your semen again and you may be able to get your partner pregnant. A more complicated surgery than vasectomy, vasectomy reversal re-connects the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles into the semen. Vasectomy reversal can be attempted even if a long time has passed since you had your vasectomy. However, only about half of vasectomy reversals are successful….

Â

Why it’s done ?

Men decide to have the surgery to restore fertility for a number of reasons, including loss of a child, remarriage or improved finances making it feasible to raise a child. A small number of men have a vasectomy reversal to treat testicular pain….

Â

During the procedure

You may receive general anesthetics to make you unconscious during the surgery. Or, your surgeon may use an epidural, spinal or local anesthetic. In any case, your anesthesia will need to keep you completely still because the surgery is so delicate. It’s done using a microscope that magnifies the surgery area….

Â

After surgery

Immediately after surgery, your doctor may cover the incisions with bandages. You’ll put on your jockstrap to hold any bandages in place and apply pressure to reduce swelling and movement. You’ll need to rest with an ice pack placed on your scrotum to reduce swelling. As the anesthetic wears off, you may have some pain and cramping that can be relieved with a painkiller, such as acetaminophen. For most men, the pain isn’t severe and gets better after a few days to a week….

Â

What you can expect

A vasectomy reversal reconnects the severed vas deferens, the tube that carries sperm from each testicle. One of two surgical procedures may be used to reverse a vasectomy. A vasovasostomy reattaches the severed ends of the vas deferens to one another. A vasoepididymostomy attaches the vas deferens directly to the epididymis, the coiled tube on the testicle where sperm matures. The point where the vas deferens is reattached is called an anastomosis….

Â

Results of Vasectomy Reversal Procedure

You can resume sexual intercourse once the incisions are healed — usually a few weeks after surgery. If a vasectomy reversal is successful, sperm usually appear in the semen after a few months, but can take as long as 15 months with some procedures. Vasectomy reversal leads to pregnancy in about half of couples within two years….

Are you considering a vasectomy reversal? Thousands of men undergo vasectomy each year as a permanent means of birth control, yet for some of these men life brings unexpected turns, which leads them to change their mind. For some, there is a strong desire to have another child a few years later. For others, there may be a tragic loss of a child. For many men, a new marriage brings a new opportunity for creating a family. Regardless of the circumstances, a vasectomy can be reversed.

When a man consents to undergo a vasectomy, he is usually instructed that the procedure should be considered to be permanent and irreversible. This is an appropriate admonishment, because a vasectomy reversal is not 100% guaranteed to work, and it is a significantly more complex operation than a vasectomy. Therefore, before undergoing a vasectomy, a man should be as sure as possible that he is finished having children. Nonetheless, even the most insightful, thoughtful decision can ultimately prove wrong. When that decision is a vasectomy, a man may still change his mind.

What is a vasectomy?

To understand the vasectomy reversal, it is important to understand the vasectomy. A vasectomy is the surgical removal of a small piece of the vas deferens. The vas deferens is the long narrow muscular tube through which sperm travel from the testicle to the urethra. It feels like a piece of undercooked spaghetti in each side of the scrotum. The sperm are produced in the testicle, and then they exit out the top of the testicle and into the epididymis. The epididymis is a very tiny, tightly coiled tubule, which runs along the back of the testicle from top to bottom.

It then turns a corner, heading back north towards the pelvis, and becomes the thicker, straighter vas deferens. During ejaculation, the muscular walls of the vas deferens tube contract to propel the sperm up to the urethra of the prostate. In the urethra, the sperm are then joined by fluids from the prostate and then ejaculated out of the penis.

When a vasectomy is performed, the doctor feels for these “pieces of spaghetti” and surgically removes a small segment of vas deferens from each side. The cut ends are then clipped, sutured or cauterized. Suddenly, the sperm can go no further than this new point of blockage.

So what happens to all the sperm?

What most men don’t realize is that once the vasectomy is performed, sperm production does not stop! Ever! Unlike women, men produce their gametes (sperm) for their entire life. A vasectomy does not stop sperm production, rather it simply blocks the entry of sperm into the urethra. Like other cells, the blocked sperm are eventually broken down by the body and reabsorbed. New sperm are continually being produced. A variable amount of pressure can build up in the tubes behind the vasectomy scar. In some cases, so much pressure builds up that the tiny tubule of the epididymis can rupture. This is commonly referred to as an epididymal “blow out.” If this happens, the site of the blow out develops scar tissue, and this actually becomes the new level of blockage to the sperm. This is neither painful or dangerous, but it is significant in that for a

vasectomy reversal to be successful, it must be performed in such a way that bypasses this new level of blockage at the epididymal blow out site.

For most men, the potential benefit, in terms of having their fertility restored, is greater than the disadvantages. However, in order to make a well-informed decision and give your consent, you need to be aware of the possible side-effects and the risk of complications.

Side-effects are the unwanted but mostly temporary effects of a successful procedure, for example, feeling sick as a result of the general anaesthetic. Anyone having a vasectomy reversal can also expect a sore and tender scrotum for a few days. You may also have some bruising and swelling.

Complications are unexpected problems that can occur during or after the procedure. Most men are not affected. The main complications of any operation are bleeding during or soon after the procedure, infection and an abnormal reaction to the anaesthetic.

For as long as you need, wear close-fitting underwear, such as a jock strap, day and night. This will support your scrotum and help to ease any discomfort and swelling.

Don’t do any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise during the first week after the operation.

You can bathe and shower but you should dry the area gently and thoroughly.

You can have sex as soon as you feel comfortable. However, you will not know whether you are producing sperm when you ejaculate until your doctor has checked a sample of semen. This is usually done around two months after surgery.6
