Laser Vasectomy – The New Age Surgery

Vasectomy is the common surgical process, which helps to make a man permanently sterile. This permanent procedure of birth control is by far one of the most recommended contraceptives today. That is not surprising in the least, because it is safe, effective, and inexpensive.

There is a traditional and a more contemporary approach to this surgery. The traditional scalpel method is usually preferred by most however the contemporary laser vasectomy is quickly picking up pace. The laser technique was discovered by a series of trials and errors following the invention of the “No scalpel” surgery in China.

As the name says, Laser vasectomy relies on powerful laser beams, which replaces the need for traditional surgical paraphernalia. However, whatever be the type of vasectomy a small incision is first made on the surface with a common surgical blade. This helps to reveal the vas tube. Then a laser beam is pointed at the vas tube, which cuts it through, and then the cut ends that are tied or sealed, as the case may be.

The need for extensive snips is eliminated here and thus this is a preferred form of vasectomy amongst many.

However, there is another approach to laser vasectomy and that is less preferred than the former, however; it is cheaper and faster. Here the vas tubes are positioned below the skin in a certain way and then the laser beams are made to run through the skin finally making contact with the tube. This has a higher risk factor because while the laser beam blindly penetrates into the skin, it has the potential to damage other nerves and blood vessels around the skin. However, some doctors still practice it for people who may not be familiar with its associated disadvantages.

Laser is an acronym for “Light Amplified by Stimulated Emission of Radiation,” and it is popularly used in several other treatments such as appendicitis, tumors, and skin issues, amongst others. Its effectiveness in other medical areas has helped to establish its popularity and that has eventually branched out to laser vasectomy. However, one must know that the powerful laser beam can also have devastative side effects if it is not performed with precaution hence whenever one is opting for laser vasectomy, only experienced experts must be allowed to perform the surgery.

Irrespective of conventional or contemporary methods, vasectomy is a highly effective and safe surgery for men who choose to become sterile to prevent further offspring’s.

An Overview of Vasectomy Reversal

Drs. Marks and Burrows of our International Center for Vasectomy Reversal perform their vasectomy reversal procedures in a dedicated state-of-the-art operating suite. It stands fully equipped and ready with all the necessary microsurgical equipment and supplies for the maximum safety and comfort of their patients.

At ICVR, the vasectomy reversal procedure is normally performed under “conscious sedation.” Small amounts of intravenous sedatives and relaxing medications are administered throughout the reversal to keep you happy, relaxed and comfortable. With conscious sedation, you save the expense of a much deeper general anesthesia and avoid the post-procedure nausea and other risks inherent in using general anesthesia.

Throughout the surgery as well as after the reversal we monitor heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, oxygen level and degree of sedation to ensure your safety. Drs. Marks and Burrows’ focus is to do whatever needs to be done with the least disturbance to the surrounding tissues, preserving adjacent nerves and blood vessels so as to minimize any unnecessary swelling and maximize a healthy recovery.

During the vasectomy reversal procedure, the scarred ends of the vas deferens are microsurgically removed and the fluid from the testicular side of the vas is analyzed. We look at the color, the consistency, the volume of the fluid, presence or absence of sperm and whether the sperm are normal, intact and moving. After healthy fluid is found, the ends of the vas deferens are reconnected. This process is followed on both sides, therefore it is actually two surgical procedures.

Drs. Marks and Burrows achieve the highest surgical success rates for their patients using the formal multi-layer technique using 10-0 or 11-0 microsutures, even though this technique is more challenging and time consuming. Sometimes, when the scarring is too severe, it is necessary to reconnect the vas at the epididymis. There is no way to predict before surgery when this procedure will be required. Therefore, it is absolutely essential that you choose a surgeon that is as experienced performing this procedure as a normal vas-to-vas connection.

Drs. Marks and Burrows only perform microsurgical vasectomy reversals, using a new top-of-the-line Leica/Wild high-power surgical microscope with Swiss optics. This provides the best visualization possible, improving the accuracy and precision of each suture placed considerably. They also have the entire surgery viewable on a close-circuit monitor, which allows them to record and photograph the surgery. All patients receive intraoperative photographs when they are discharged, as well as photographs of the vas deferens fluid.

The best predictor of a successful vasectomy reversal procedure is the microsurgical skill and expertise of the surgeon. The level of skill required can only be achieved and maintained when the surgeon is performing vasectomy reversals at least 3-4 times a week over a period of years.

A vasectomy is a sterilization process that men undergo and is considered a permanent method of birth control. A vasectomy reversal procedure is done when the tubes that were cut in the vasectomy are reconnected.

Most vasectomy reversal procedures can be done as an outpatient procedure, so it doesn’t take long, but the convalescence time at home is usually a few days. A vasectomy reversal needs to be thought about carefully, because although the procedure is successful it doesn’t always result in pregnancy and it can be expensive. A vasectomy reversal is more expensive than the vasectomy because it is a more complicated process.

What are the Success Rates?

The success of a reversal procedure depends on how long it has been since you had the vasectomy. Generally the chances of the procedure being successful go up, when the reversal is done as quickly as a few years after the vasectomy took place.

When a vasectomy is done with a twenty year span previous to a vasectomy reversal the success rate diminishes because other blockages may have formed and in some cases men have developed antibodies to their sperm. Even so many men feel that taking the risk is still well worth it because pregnancy can occur in 50% of cases. Reversals often work best when they are done within 10 years of the original vasectomy. When a reversal is done 10 years after the vasectomy then the success rate diminishes to about 30%.

The Surgery Itself

A vasectomy reversal takes about 2 to 4 hours and then you will remain in the clinic for a few more hours to give the anesthesia time to wear off. Most men return home the same day.
Once you are home you may experience mild to moderate pain but you can return to your normal life in about three to four weeks.

Are There Risks?

Any surgery involves some risks although a reversal is usually a safe procedure. Risks you are taking with this type of procedure include:
• Injury to nerves or arteries in the scrotum
• Fluid buildup that may require draining by the doctor
• Infection

For these reasons the doctor will want to keep a close eye on the surgery area after the procedure, so your post op instructions will be important.

by Sarah Michaels

Whether they want to start a new family or are experiencing vasectomy pain in their testicles, men who have had a vasectomy might decide to get a vasectomy reversal. A more complicated surgery than a vasectomy, a vasectomy reversal re-connects the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles into the semen, according to Mayo Clinic. After successful surgery, sperm are present in the semen again and men may be able to get their partner pregnant. While it is possible to perform a vasectomy reversal no matter how much times has passed since the original surgery, statistics reveal that only about half of vasectomy reversals are successful.

Although complications with the surgery are rare, the following are possible reversal vasectomy side effects provided by MayoClinic.com. * Bleeding within the scrotum. When this type of bleeding occurs, it can lead to a collection of blood that causes painful swelling. In order to reduce this risk, men are encouraged to avoid aspirin before and after surgery and follow the doctor’s instructions to rest after surgery.

* Infection. While it is not common, an infection at the surgery site is always a risk with any surgery.

* Inflammation. Your immune system can form an inflammatory mass called a sperm granuloma if there is sperm leakage into the scrotum. Granulomas can sometimes form after surgery and can be a major sign that the vasectomy reversal was unsuccessful.

* Damage to nerves and blood vessels. Unfortunately, if there is damage to the nerves and blood vessels, this can sometimes reduces fertility after a vasectomy reversal.

In addition to the aforementioned risks associated with a vasectomy reversal, watch out for the following signs and symptoms during reversal vasectomy recovery, including: fever, swelling that worsens or won’t go down, difficult urination, a marble-sized lump in your scrotum, or bleeding from an incision that continues after you have pinched the site between two gauze pads for ten minutes.
