There are several misconceptions about vasectomy reversal; one of the most common fallacies that people harbor is about an increase in the level of testosterone after the procedure. Several men actually choose the procedure in the hopes that it may help to augment the level of testosterone; unfortunately, the fact is that there is no clinical documented evidence that proves such an effect. Regardless of how many sites you can find online that make statements to that effect; the reality is that there is no clinical evidence that stands in favor of this hypothesis. However; some light may be shed on a possible connection between a vasectomy reversal procedure and the level of testosterone; but there are no conclusions that favor the argument at this point in time.

So a simple one word answer to the question, does vasectomy reversal increase the level of testosterone in the male body is NO. But the surgery can yield other results such as:

The procedure allows men who have been through a vasectomy to become fertile again. Statistically; the procedure has a success rate of 65% to 75%; that is almost 75% of the men who g for vasectomy reversal achieve fatherhood in future.

The second effect of the procedure is a reduction in the pain in 70% to 80% of the people who suffer from photosensitive vaporization of the prostate and experience pain due to back pressure.

Then there are also indirect ways in which a vasectomy reversal may help in certain situations; for instance:

In several instances a vasectomy reversal is specifically conducted if a patient is suffering from PVP; however opting for the surgery not only alleviates the pain but also this in turn also leads to an improvement in the mental health of the person suffering from the disorder. Indirectly; this may have a positive effect on the health the levels of the patient. Pain and chronic illnesses are known to cause depression and there are also other health related ramifications such as a decrease in the level of testosterone. The procedure can help to raise the levels of testosterone and promote a feeling of well being

Some can accept sterility but not all of us have the mental strength to accept the reality that we may never be able to father a child. This can also lead to depression in such a scenario restoring fertility can change the mental condition and the physical well being of a person. Since in several cases the surgery helps to elevate the level of testosterone in the body; it helps in the improvement of physical condition. So if you fit in either one of these categories, you should seriously consider vasectomy reversal and as an indirect effect the level of testosterone may be augmented as a result of the surgery.

It is imperative to ensure that you choose the surgeon and the clinic in which you intend to get the procedure done after due consideration. The skill of the doctor and the support staff; the rate of success in other patients who have had the procedure done in the clinic will impact your chances of success as well. There are also other aspects which will have a bearing on the outcome of the surgery such as drinking, smoking; health condition and the duration between vasectomy and reversal procedures. Vasectomy reversal is an outpatient procedure that takes less than two hours. You will have the choice to have the procedure conducted under the influence of epidural or general an aesthesia.

There will be tenderness in and around the scortum for a week after the procedure and you will be asked to not indulge in sexual activities for four weeks after the procedure. Through the recovery period, you will have to see the surgeon at least once to ensure that you are healing properly. The doctor may even ask you to get certain tests done including a semen analysis so that the success of the procedure can be determined.

Hey Doc, Is My Vasectomy Reversible?

One of the greatest medical misconceptions is that a vasectomy is a permanent physical alteration. In reality, a vasectomy is reversible. The procedure is a delicate one, but it is possible.

How is a Vasectomy Reversible?

When a man undergoes a vasectomy, the vas deferens (the tubes that deliver sperm) are either cut or blocked. When a vasectomy reversal is performed, the physician must perform a microsurgery to reattach the cut ends so the flow of sperm can begin again. This is accomplished through one of two procedures – a vasovasostomy or an epididmovasostomy.

Vasovasostomy is the more common of the two procedures and it accomplished by surgically reconnecting the two cut ends of the vans deferens back together. An epididmovasostomy on the other hand is a much more complex procedure that has to be performed when scarring, inflammation or chronic congestion prevents the sperm from entering the vans deferens. In this procedure, the physician must surgically connect the vans deferens directly to the epididymis, the tube that runs behind the testis.

Why Would Anyone Want a Vasectomy Reversed?

People change their minds. Sometimes, one’s life may take a change, such as a divorcee marrying a woman who wants to have children or a couple realizing that they do want to raise a family after all. Regardless of the reason, between six and twelve percent of vasectomized men choose to have their procedure reversed.

It’s important to know that men’s bodies continue to produce sperm even after a vasectomy is performed. Because the sperm are unable to pass through to join the seminal fluid due to the vasectomy, they build up, eventually break down and get harmlessly reabsorbed by the body.

How Successful are Reversible Vasectomy Procedures?

With improved microsurgical techniques, reversed vasectomies have become not only more popular, but more effective. Even still, there is no guarantee that a Vasectomy Reversal will result in pregnancy.

Studies indicate that sperm recovery occurs successfully in up to 90 percent of vasectomy reversal patients, and of those patients, approximately 50 percent achieve pregnancy.

Are Vasectomy Reversals Covered by Insurance?

Every healthcare insurance provider is different, but most do not cover the vasectomy reversal procedure since it is considered an elective surgery. Of course, before making your decision, be sure to check with your insurance company to learn if that is the case with your policy. If you discover that your insurance company will not cover the cost of the procedure, most physicians offer financing options to help you manage the cost of the vasectomy reversal.

Before making the decision to reverse a vasectomy, you should learn as much about the procedures as possible and those who perform them.
