Why Women Choose Tubal Ligation Surgery

Each year, many women consider the option of female sterilization. Normally, this includes the idea of having tubal ligation surgery. Commonly known as having their tubes tied, this is a very typical surgery for a woman to undergo just after having her last child. For many women, there is no regret about having her tubes tied. However some women may come to regret that decision later in life.

The reasons why a woman would undergo tubal ligation surgery are numerous. Sometimes it is simply because the couple has decided that they are finished having children and this is a good way to prevent future pregnancies. However, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that cause a woman to choose to have her tubes tied.

For example, if a woman is in a relationship which is not stable or is abusive in some way, she may opt to have this procedure in order to avoid bringing a child into the situation. Some women make a decision early in their lives that they don’t want to have any children at all, so they may have their tubes tied to prevent this from occurring. These women and their spouses may feel it is important to not bring any more children into a chaotic world.

There are certain women who experience heavy bleeding each month during their menstrual cycle. This is called menorrhagia and may need to be handled medically by having procedures such as an endometrial ablation. When a woman has this procedure done, the doctor removes the lining of the uterus which does not allow her to have heavy periods any longer.

Some women, depending upon the age they are when they have the ablation procedure done, will resume their menstrual cycle at some point. This does not necessarily mean she is capable of carrying a fetus to term because much of the lining of the uterus was removed. This is why many doctors most often recommend that a woman have tubal ligation surgery to prevent the chance of becoming pregnant since it puts her and the baby at higher risk.

Deciding whether or not to have tubal ligation surgery is certainly not an easy thing for any woman. This is because she must make future plans and decide whether or not she will have any additional children. For some women, that can be a hard decision to make.

Many times women have their tubes tied after having what they believe to be their last child. Due to life circumstances changing, such as a second marriage, many women later realize that they are not finished having children after all. When this happens, the question of having a tubal ligation reversal often comes up. The question that follows is often what are the chances of getting pregnant after this reversal procedure?

After a recent 8 year study on this particular topic, researchers have found that the success rate of the tubal ligation reversal procedure depends on three major factors. The first factor is the age of the patient at the time of the procedure being reversed. Just as with the general population, the rate of miscarriage increases with age.

The second factor that played a large role in the chances of getting pregnant was the method used in the original tubal ligation. For women who have had their tubes tied using tubal clips, there was a 75% chance that they would have a successful chance of getting pregnant after reversal surgery. For those who had a tubal ligation using tubal rings, there was a 72% chance of successfully getting pregnant.

As for other types of sterilization, the rates went down for women who had a resection or coagulation during their original surgery. Researchers believe this is because using the clip or the ring method only causes minimal damage to the fallopian tubes which is easier to repair and which leaves longer tubes which leads to our third factor.

The third factor that determines whether a woman will have better chances of getting pregnant after a tubal ligation reversal procedure is how long her tubes are. Depending on how the doctor handled the original tubal surgery, a woman may have tubes ranging in length from 7 1/2 cm to less than two and half centimeters.

The longer the tubes, the better the chances are for a woman to get pregnant. For example, women who had an average fallopian tube length 7 1/2 cm or longer have a 77% chance of getting pregnant. For women who had shorter tubal lengths of less than 2.5 cm, the rate of pregnancy decreased but was still a respectable 38%.

In fact, the doctors collecting the data for this study became aware that getting pregnant with one tube and even as short as 1 cm can still happen. This should lead to the conclusion that any woman wanting a tubal ligation reversal will find her chances of getting pregnant are good although they may vary greatly depending upon the above factors.

So what happens to all the sperm?

What most men don’t realize is that once the vasectomy is performed, sperm production does not stop! Ever! Unlike women, men produce their gametes (sperm) for their entire life. A vasectomy does not stop sperm production, rather it simply blocks the entry of sperm into the urethra. Like other cells, the blocked sperm are eventually broken down by the body and reabsorbed. New sperm are continually being produced. A variable amount of pressure can build up in the tubes behind the vasectomy scar. In some cases, so much pressure builds up that the tiny tubule of the epididymis can rupture. This is commonly referred to as an epididymal “blow out.” If this happens, the site of the blow out develops scar tissue, and this actually becomes the new level of blockage to the sperm. This is neither painful or dangerous, but it is significant in that for a
