Informed consent means a person has access to and understands all relevant information about a medical or surgical treatment necessary to make an informed decision about it. With regard to tubal reversal surgery, informed consent means that a woman understands how the surgery is performed, the alternative treatment of in vitro fertilization, and the potential benefits, risks, and likelihood of success from these treatments.

Jeannine asks on the Tubal Reversal Message Board for input from other message board members about early pregnancy symptoms with untied tubes. She posts, “Okay, I know you can find out what early pregnancy symptoms are on the web. However, I was wondering if some of the women on the board would share their early pregnancy symptoms and when did they start to experience them (how many DPO).” Pregnancy signs and symptoms differ among women and pregnancies. The most common early pregnancy sign is delayed menstruation. Some women experience pregnancy signs even before their period is delayed. For others, signs or symptoms will not develop over a few weeks or may not even be present at all. Understanding pregnancy signs and symptoms is important for women who have had their tubes untied. Dr. Berger recommends monitoring early pregnancy with quantitative serum HCG assays and scheduling an ultrasound exam when the HCG level reaches 1500. This excerpt is a good example of how women support and inform each other on the Tubal Reversal Message Board regardless of where they are from. Many women might feel they are alone in their desire to have another baby after a previous tubal ligation, but when they participate in the message board they realize that they are not alone at all. Although reversal surgery at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center is statistically and financially the best option for
pregnancy after a tubal ligation, women over age 40 have a special set of circumstances that are – unfortunately – often not addressed during an IVF consultation. The truth is, most IVF clinics will not accept patients over age 40 or 42 unless they agree to use donor eggs (eggs from a younger woman). This is to help keep their statistics high. It will be very important to ask your reproductive specialist very directly whether he/she will accept a woman age 42 for IVF without donor eggs or decline you if your FSH level is slightly elevated (as many clinics do).
