Although reversal surgery at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center is statistically and financially the best option for pregnancy after a tubal ligation, women over age 40 have a special set of circumstances that are – unfortunately – often not addressed during an IVF consultation. The truth is, most IVF clinics will not accept patients over age 40 or 42 unless they agree to use

Carol, a member of the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center Message Board members, asks other ladies to share their age and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) levels because she would like to discuss trying to conceive after age 35 and the importance of FSH when trying to achieve pregnancy. An FSH serum assay on cycle day 3 can determine if a woman has a good number of healthy eggs left in her ovaries. An elevated FSH level indicates a reduction in the quantity of eggs. A normal or low FSH level shows that there is a good reservoir of eggs for future ovulations. Carol had tubal reversal surgery with Dr. Berger in April 2008 and is optimistic that she will be able to conceive a pregnancy since her FSH was low (less than 2) and her tube lengths after surgery were 6.5 cm and 7. 0cm.

I had all but given up hope but now I’m currently 14 weeks pregnant at the age of 44!” Many times women age 40 or over who have had tubal ligation are encouraged to undergo IVF with donor egg due to their age. Tubal Reversal surgery with Dr. Berger gives women of any age the chance to conceive a child naturally. In a study performed by Dr. Berger, pregnancy rates after tubal reversal were higher than after IVF within every age group.
