Tubal Ligation Side Effects

Is FSH An Important Factor when Trying to Conceive After Tubal Reversal Surgery?

Carol, a member of the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center Message Board members, asks other ladies to share their age and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) levels because she would like to discuss trying to conceive after age 35 and the importance of FSH when trying to achieve pregnancy. An FSH serum assay on cycle day 3 can determine if a woman has a good number of healthy eggs left in her . An elevated FSH level indicates a reduction in the quantity of eggs. A normal or low FSH level shows that there is a good reservoir of eggs for future ovulations. Carol had tubal reversal surgery with Dr. Berger in April 2008 and is optimistic that she will be able to conceive a pregnancy since her FSH was low (less than 2) and her tube lengths after surgery were 6.5 cm and 7. 0cm.

Pam Mills, CRNA is a nurse anesthetist at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center.
Pam Mills, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), shares her story of working as part of the anesthesia care team at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. Pam has been working with Dr. Gary Berger spanning two decades and believes her experience with Dr. Berger has given her the opportunity to work one-on-one with tubal reversal patients in an outpatient setting and to ensure they receive the best medical care they have ever experienced. Ms. Mills explains that the anesthesia team talks with patients individually so gather information about past anesthesia experiences and to develop a personalized anesthesia plan. But Pam is also a believer in the power of positive thinking and works closely with patients to ensure they are calm and informed, with the seed of positive thought planted. She and the rest of the anesthesia staff go the extra mile to ensure the patient’s safety, comfort, and sense of well-being before, during, and after the tubal reversal procedure. Tubal Reversal Pregnancy Study Report 2007

Summary

Results of the most recent and largest study of pregnancies and after tubal reversal surgery are now available from the Tubal Reversal Pregnancy Study Report 2007. This is a prospective observational study of over 3000 women who had their tubal reversal procedures performed by Dr. Gary Berger during the 5 year period 2001-2005. The overall pregnancy rate after tubal reversal was 69%. Age at the time of reversal surgery was an important factor associated with pregnancies and their outcomes. Age-specific pregnancy rates were: 82% for women under 30, 76% for ages 30-34, 67% for ages 35-39, and 41% for women 40 years or older. were also associated with age. Younger women had lower miscarriages rates and higher birth rates than older women.

Dr. James Split, a board certified anesthesiologist, is the newest member of the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center staff. Although only 4 tubal reversal surgeries are performed each day at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, there are 2 anesthesiologists and a nurse anesthetist on staff. The primary responsibility of the anesthesia department is to ensure patients’ safety during surgery and comfort during recovery. Many of Dr. Berger’s patients who are having their tubes untied will be speaking with Dr. Split as a part of their preoperative evaluation and will meet him on the day prior to or on the day of their tubal ligation reversals.
