A lot of women have their tubes tied every year in order to refrain from having any more children. In 1995, the CDC determined that over 15 million women in the age group of women from 15 – 44 had done this in order to provide for birth control. What might surprise you though is how many women want to reverse the procedure and have a pregnancy after tubal ligation.

That figure is again from the CDC study. In the CREST study, it was determined that almost 25% of those women wanted their tubes untied. This might be a surprising number to many who think of having your tubes tied as a permanent form of birth control. What could cause so many women to rethink their previous decision?

What it all boils down to is guilt and regret usually caused by some type of change in life situation. With a change in husbands or significant other, a woman might regret having been sterilized. She and her new partner decide they want a child so she decides she wants a reversal. For other women, it could be a change of heart due to religious convictions, change due to financial improvements, or even due to the horrible untimely death of a child.

However, there are options to have the procedure reversed and to have another pregnancy after tubal ligation whatever the reason for the change of heart. Some may argue it, but the results of two other studies (or report as one calls itself) in comparison show that tubal ligation reversal surgery is the best option for women who want the best success rate and the less expensive option.

This is a surgical procedure that is done one time for the vast majority of women unlike the alternative. During the operation, the surgeon will look at the tied tubes to see where the blockage is located. He will then proceed to remove this blockage and, depending upon the surgeon, use a stent to see if the resulting segments are then unblocked. If so, the segments are sutured together in order to make one complete pathway from each ovary to the uterus.

As this procedure is less expensive on average than the other alternative, this makes it the option most women should seek out. It is not only less expensive, it has a higher success rate over time as well and, as previously pointed out, it is not a procedure that has to done over and over costing you an additional fee each time you try for a successful pregnancy.

There are other places than your local hospital you can go to have a tubal reversal. In fact, I highly suggest looking into Dr. Gary Berger and the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as tubal reversals are all that is done there.

You will probably find that the cost, even with transportation and hotel, is less than a local doctor would charge anyway. Besides, Dr. B has been doing this for years and is very experienced at it. Do you want someone who occasionally does a TR or one who does it every day of the week?

“I had an endometrial ablation. Can I get a tubal ligation reversal?”

The above is a question that is received over and over at various tubal ligation reversal centers, websites, and forums. Now why would this question be coming up? What is an endometrial ablation?

Usually an endometrial ablation is a procedure that is done on women who have excessive bleeding which cannot be controlled by some other method. It’s the last thing to try to stop the excessive bleeding before a hysterectomy which is a surgical procedure. What that means is that the ablation procedure does not involve surgery and therefore is a relatively safer alternative to hysterectomy. Excessive bleeding can cause its own problems which is why such steps may be taken.

What is done during the ablation is that the endometrial lining of the uterus is removed. Along with that layer, the regenerative endometrial cells are removed as well. Let’s explain this a tad better.

Every month the endometrial cells regenerate the endometrial lining of the uterus. As the month goes by, the lining gets thicker. If you get pregnant, the fetus implants in this lining and this is the way it is nurtured during gestation. However, if you do not get pregnant, that lining is sloughed off and excreted from the body. That is what causes women’s periods.

For women who just have too much bleeding, after other things are tried first, an endometrial ablation will be done. Your doctor will remove the lining and the regenerative cells. Most methods of doing this fall into two categories. Either freezing is done or the layer is burned off in some manner with the latter method being the most common.

As there is no longer an endometrial layer to support a fetus, your doctor will strongly suggest you have tubal ligation and most women do. However, for some reason some women change their minds. According to the CDC, about 25% of women who have tubal ligation regret the decision and want to reverse it. How many women who have had endometrial ablation feel this way is not something that we have statistics for. However, as mentioned above, it is a question that comes in regularly to tubal ligation reversal doctors.

So can you get a tubal ligation reversal or should you? The answer is, it depends. Although most of the regenerative endometrial cells are removed, the procedure will not remove all of them. In fact, within five years, many women will find their periods return. This means there is a possibility that you could maintain a pregnancy. Some women never get a tubal ligation after their ablation and some of those do get pregnant and have babies. The good news is that the younger you are the better your chances of getting pregnant following a tubal ligation reversal after endometrial ablation. However, there are risks and you should learn more about these.

Many times women have their tubes tied after having what they believe to be their last child. Due to life circumstances changing, such as a second marriage, many women later realize that they are not finished having children after all. When this happens, the question of having a tubal ligation reversal often comes up. The question that follows is often what are the chances of getting pregnant after this reversal procedure?

After a recent 8 year study on this particular topic, researchers have found that the success rate of the tubal ligation reversal procedure depends on three major factors. The first factor is the age of the patient at the time of the procedure being reversed. Just as with the general population, the rate of miscarriage increases with age.

The second factor that played a large role in the chances of getting pregnant was the method used in the original tubal ligation. For women who have had their tubes tied using tubal clips, there was a 75% chance that they would have a successful chance of getting pregnant after reversal surgery. For those who had a tubal ligation using tubal rings, there was a 72% chance of successfully getting pregnant.

As for other types of sterilization, the rates went down for women who had a resection or coagulation during their original surgery. Researchers believe this is because using the clip or the ring method only causes minimal damage to the fallopian tubes which is easier to repair and which leaves longer tubes which leads to our third factor.

The third factor that determines whether a woman will have better chances of getting pregnant after a tubal ligation reversal procedure is how long her tubes are. Depending on how the doctor handled the original tubal surgery, a woman may have tubes ranging in length from 7 1/2 cm to less than two and half centimeters.

The longer the tubes, the better the chances are for a woman to get pregnant. For example, women who had an average fallopian tube length 7 1/2 cm or longer have a 77% chance of getting pregnant. For women who had shorter tubal lengths of less than 2.5 cm, the rate of pregnancy decreased but was still a respectable 38%.

In fact, the doctors collecting the data for this study became aware that getting pregnant with one tube and even as short as 1 cm can still happen. This should lead to the conclusion that any woman wanting a tubal ligation reversal will find her chances of getting pregnant are good although they may vary greatly depending upon the above factors.

Tubal ligation side effects affect an unknown number of women. Several hundred thousand women undergo having their tubes tied each year with the plan of having no more children. What they don’t plan on is suffering from any number of symptoms that can make their lives a total mess.
