A lot of women have their tubes tied every year in order to refrain from having any more children. In 1995, the CDC determined that over 15 million women in the age group of women from 15 – 44 had done this in order to provide for birth control. What might surprise you though is how many women want to reverse the procedure and have a pregnancy after tubal ligation.

That figure is again from the CDC study. In the CREST study, it was determined that almost 25% of those women wanted their tubes untied. This might be a surprising number to many who think of having your tubes tied as a permanent form of birth control. What could cause so many women to rethink their previous decision?

What it all boils down to is guilt and regret usually caused by some type of change in life situation. With a change in husbands or significant other, a woman might regret having been sterilized. She and her new partner decide they want a child so she decides she wants a reversal. For other women, it could be a change of heart due to religious convictions, change due to financial improvements, or even due to the horrible untimely death of a child.

However, there are options to have the procedure reversed and to have another pregnancy after tubal ligation whatever the reason for the change of heart. Some may argue it, but the results of two other studies (or report as one calls itself) in comparison show that tubal ligation reversal surgery is the best option for women who want the best success rate and the less expensive option.

This is a surgical procedure that is done one time for the vast majority of women unlike the alternative. During the operation, the surgeon will look at the tied tubes to see where the blockage is located. He will then proceed to remove this blockage and, depending upon the surgeon, use a stent to see if the resulting segments are then unblocked. If so, the segments are sutured together in order to make one complete pathway from each ovary to the uterus.

As this procedure is less expensive on average than the other alternative, this makes it the option most women should seek out. It is not only less expensive, it has a higher success rate over time as well and, as previously pointed out, it is not a procedure that has to done over and over costing you an additional fee each time you try for a successful pregnancy.

There are other places than your local hospital you can go to have a tubal reversal. In fact, I highly suggest looking into Dr. Gary Berger and the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as tubal reversals are all that is done there.

You will probably find that the cost, even with transportation and hotel, is less than a local doctor would charge anyway. Besides, Dr. B has been doing this for years and is very experienced at it. Do you want someone who occasionally does a TR or one who does it every day of the week?

Pregnancy Statistics – What’s Best after Your Tubal Ligation Procedure

Becoming pregnant again is the goal of many women after a tubal ligation procedure. What these women want to know is the pregnancy statistics associated with the available options to do so. With this information, these women can then decide which alternative to choose.

In any one year in the fertile age group of 15-44, almost 10,000,000 women have a tubal ligation procedure. This information comes from the 1995 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s CREST study. That same study tells us that every year almost 25% of those women want to reverse their tubal ligation. That’s a lot of women and their partners seeking some answers.

To get pregnant, any woman who had her tubes tied has two alternatives. One is IVF. The other is a tubal reversal surgery. While you can learn about the pros and cons of these two options elsewhere, in this article we’ll point you in the direction of some studies that provide pregnancy statistics to help you make your decision.

The first study comes from the CDC again. It’s available at their website. Look for the 2006 Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Report on the cdc.gov site. This report will give you the pregnancy statistics on IVF. It can take a bit of digging but the answers are there including the fact that under 29% of ART cycles resulted in a live birth. Now these results are from all the IVF centers that reported. The individual one you are contemplating may have better or worse results.

The other alternative for getting pregnant after a tubal ligation procedure is having tubal reversal surgery. Given the amount of women above wanting to untie their tubes, you would think a government agency like the CDC or an educational institution would perform the study to find out what kind of pregnancy statistics you can get with tubal reversal. But none of these have done so.

However, the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center located in North Carolina collected this data from their patients. At this center, the staff only does tubal surgery and reversals. Nothing else. Over an eight year period, they collected data from over 5000 women to put together their pregnancy statistics. No other organization or group has done so.

These pregnancy statistics are available to you at their website. They provide the information in easy-to-read tables. The data is divided up by tubal length, tubal ligation procedure and by age. These three factors play a big part in a successful outcome. One on page of the report is also a link to the CDC ART report mentioned above. This tubal reversal report plus the one from the CDC will provide you with all the pregnancy statistics you need.

I had all but given up hope but now I’m currently 14 weeks pregnant at the age of 44!” Many times women age 40 or over who have had tubal ligation are encouraged to undergo IVF with donor egg due to their age. Tubal Reversal surgery with Dr. Berger gives women of any age the chance to conceive a child naturally. In a study performed by Dr. Berger, pregnancy rates after tubal reversal were higher than after IVF within every age group. Similarly, birth rates were higher after tubal reversal at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center than after IVF for women of all ages and the differences increased with increasing maternal age.

New studies show an increase in prostate cancer – should we worry?

I’d say no.

Both studies have been published recently. The first one is published in Mumbai, India, and the second in Maryland, USA. I don’t propose to discuss the Indian study, as despite showing an increased risk, the authors conclude that due to the limitations of the study and the possibility of selection bias they could not form any definite conclusions, so they opted to recommend further research. But the Maryland study is worth looking at.

There are two ways that vasectomy / prostate cancer studies have been traditionally done. One is a medical records based study, and the other is the questionnaire type study. The medical records study always strikes me as the much sounder methodology. Get a large group of men diagnosed with prostate cancer, and then ascertain who has a vasectomy, or a large group of men with vasectomy and ask about prostate cancer – simple. Both methods have been used, and the striking thing about the results of this type of study is that they invariably conclude there is no association. The results have been repeated over a number of large records based studies over the years conducted in the US, Scandinavia and New Zealand (amongst others). The Recent New Zealand study used data from the national cancer registry, and is regarded by many as the most thorough study to date. Contrast that with the questionnaire studies that rely on self reporting data for both having a vasectomy and prostate cancer that in the main show up some form of association.

The Maryland study is a postal questionnaire study. Of the study population, 3373 men reported having a vasectomy, and 78 of them reported having prostate cancer. That equates to an incidence rate of 2.3%. There is no mention of the control group’s statistics. The 78 men were split up into age group at time of vasectomy, and any conclusions were the result of mathematical extrapolation. I personally feel that results from counting the numbers are much more methodologically sound.

One thing most prostate cancer / vasectomy studies fail to do is to compare their incidence rates with large data studies for the incidence rate in general – this study is no exception. There is a LOT of data about the incidence of prostate cancer available, so there is no excuse not to IMHO. Maryland has had a state cancer registry since 1982. As the recently published study was started in 1989, it would have made sense to me to co-operate with the state cancer registry and perform a medical records based study. The overall incidence rate In Maryland is reported in 1996 as being 157.4 per 100,000. This equates to an incidence rate of 0.16%. The black to white ratio being 1.7. Most research finds a higher incidence rate amongst black men – this data being about average.

Personally, I find the results are interesting, but for me the research asks many more questions than it answers. I question the use of a questionnaire based study when the state cancer registry would have been willing to co-operate in doing a large, records based study. I am uneasy with conclusions based on very small samples, and based in the main on mathematical extrapolations. And I also am curious as to how the researchers managed to get an incidence rate of prostate cancer over fourteen times higher than the state incidence rate.
