Reasons for conflicting vasectomy reversal results

While a vasectomy is a relatively easy surgery, reversing a vasectomy is not. Reversing a vasectomy is a challenging operation that re-connects the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles into the semen. However, due to conflicting test results–a rare but possible occurrence after surgery–many men wonder if this type of surgery is successful and if they will ever be able to have a baby.
About half of vasectomy reversals are successful, according to the MayoClinic.com. After a vasectomy reversal, many men report having a positive sperm test result, only to receive a negative result after the second test. Dr. Todd B. Nippoldt, M.D. tells the Mayo Clinic that there are several possible explanations for conflicting test results, including testicular temperature, smoking or the use of certain medications-all of which temporarily decrease sperm count. Other reasons for vasectomy problems such as conflicting test results include scarring. Scarring right after a vasectomy reversal blocks the vas deferens, resulting in only negative sperm analyses. Scarring that happens much later may result in a positive sperm analysis followed by a negative sperm analysis.
For other men, patience is an important virtue. It can take up to 15 months for sperm to appear after vasectomy recovery and successful reversal surgery.
To find out exactly why your results are so different, consult your doctor. Dr. Nippoldt says that your doctor “may recommend another semen analysis or perhaps a vasogram – a special X-ray used to check for blockages in the vas deferens. If a blockage is detected, it may be helpful to repeat the vasectomy reversal procedure.”
