Animal and human data indicate that vasectomy does not increase atherosclerosis and that increases in circulating immune complexes after vasectomy are transient. Furthermore, the weight of the evidence regarding prostate and testicular cancer suggests that men with vasectomy are not at increased risk of these cancers.

Post-Vasectomy Pain Syndrome

Post-Vasectomy Pain Syndrome (PVPS), genital pain of varying intensity that may last for a lifetime, is estimated to appear in between 5% and 33% of vasectomized men, depending on the severity of pain that qualifies for the particular study In one study, vasectomy reversal was found to be 69% effective for reducing the symptoms of chronic post-vasectomy pain. Treatment options for 31% of patients whose pain did not respond to vasectomy reversal were limited. The study was very small, only evaluating 13 patients, and it was performed only once, making it difficult to draw solid conclusions. In severe cases orchiectomy has been resorted to.

Possible Vasectomy-Dementia Link

Researchers reported in February 2007 that a survey of a small number of men with a rare form of dementia found that more than twice as many as would be expected had undergone vasectomies. The study has not yet been verified by other researchers, and the authors say larger studies are needed to better understand the issue.

Are you thinking about a vasectomy reversal?

Have you had a vasectomy but have since changed your mind?

Do you and your partner now want children?

Are you in a new relationship and want to start a family?

If you have answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions then a vasectomy reversal may be the solution. This complete guide to vasectomy reversal surgery is here to help you with what can be a difficult decision to make. Vasectomy reversal surgery is not to be undertaken lightly and you need to be certain that this is the right choice for you. Vasectomy reversal surgery is carried out to undo the effects of a vasectomy. In other words, it rejoins the vas deferens tubes which had been cut during a vasectomy. This is discussed further in our about vasectomy reversals section.

Why choose to have a vasectomy reversal?

Those who choose to have a vasectomy reversal are not always in their late years, though this may be the presumption by many. Patients who choose to have the procedure can be anything from twenty-five up to fifty-five, but it is always down to individual circumstances and discretion. The most obvious reason is that people change their minds about having more children, but there are also cases where there is a sense of dissatisfaction after the initial vasectomy procedure. Whatever your reason for contemplating a vasectomy reversal, this guide will help you to answer any questions you may be having about the process and, if you choose to go ahead, enable you to undergo treatment with an informed judgment.

Making the right decision

If you are reading this then you are likely to have had a vasectomy in the past. Perhaps you came to the stage in your life where you did not want to have any more children, or, you did not want to have kids in the first place. Now, however, you may be considering a vasectomy reversal. This may be down to certain changes in your life that you did not anticipate at the time, perhaps a new partner who has given you a different outlook on having children for example. Vasectomy reversal, however, is something that should not be taken lightly. It is after all a type of surgery and it is essential that you research this procedure in order to understand what it involves, any potential risks and whether or not it is the right choice for you. This guide to vasectomy reversal will help you to answer such questions through an understanding approach, in order to give you the best chance of a successful procedure.

Mother’s diet can help determine sex of children

“A joint study conducted by researchers at the Universities of Oxford and Exeter has turned up the tantalizing evidence that a child’s gender might be determined by mother’s diet around the time of conception.

If this is true, it goes a long way in solving the mystery of why there is a decreasing number of male babies born each year in the industrialized nations of the world, including the United States, Canada, and the UK.

The UK research team involved dietary analysis of 740 women pregnant with their first child. None of the women knew what their child-to-be’s gender was. The mothers supplied the researchers with records of their dietary intake just before conception and throughout their pregnancies.

Using dietary intake as a measure, the mothers were divided into three groups according to their energy (caloric) intake around the time of conception. Of the group consuming the highest-energy diet, 56% had boy babies. The lowest-energy group produced only 45% boys.

The highest-energy group not only consumed the most calories, they typically consumed a very nutritious diet, too. The foods they ate were of better quality, providing a healthy level of nutrients. The foods eaten were rich in Vitamins C, E, and B12 as well as calcium and potassium. The mothers producing sons also consumed a breakfast of cereal on a routine basis.

The rate of male births has declined over the past 40 years. The drop in numbers is about one less male baby per 1,000 births each year. There is a corresponding drop in caloric (energy) intake in the typical diet of the industrialized world, which contributes to the current obesity epidemic these same countries are now facing.

Breakfast doesn’t seem to be very important anymore to many people in the industrial world and many adults regularly skip breakfast. In 1965, 86% of Americans said they ate breakfast regularly. By 1991, the breakfast eaters had dropped to only 75%.

The very close association between mom’s diet at conception through to the earliest stage of pregnancy and her baby’s gender is a phenomenon found in nature, too, and may have evolved as a means of producing descendants. In many cultures around the world and throughout time, male offspring has been preferred, possibly because sons are capable of producing more offspring themselves than daughters can. The children born to families of high status within a society typically bear more sons than daughters and they enjoy an ample diet higher in quality and nutrients than the average family within a given community.”

——————————————————————————–

My first PG I ate healthy and had a boy,
second ate everything in site and had a boy,
third ate nothing and had a girl,
fourth ate nothing and had a boy,
and fifth ate everything and had a girl.

Before you run out to buy breakfast cereal to conceive a boy, I just wanted to let you know that I have eaten breakfast cereal everyday of my life (41 years now) and made three girls

I have to be honest and say that I am a bit skeptical of this study. Probably, I should go read the original report, but from the article, I have a few questions…. Can anyone explain this to me? “There is a corresponding drop in caloric (energy) intake in the typical diet of the industrialized world, which contributes to the current obesity epidemic these same countries are now facing.” It seems to me that More Calories = Obesity Epidemic. How does it make sense that Less Calories = Obesity Epidemic?

And if More Calories = Boys and we (as a society) are eating high calorie diets and having an obesity epidemic, then why is there the reported shortage of boy babies?

I feel like I’m missing the big picture

Have a great day ~ Michelle

I thought whether or not the sperm was an X or Y determined gender?
——————————————————————————–

Andie,
Yes, you are correct. The mom carries only X eggs, so if sperm X gets there it is XX = Girl and if sperm Y gets there, it is XY = Boy.

However, there are differences in the X sperm and Y sperm. The Y sperm tends to be smaller and faster and may get up the tubes faster. If the egg is there, it would fertilize first. If the egg isn’t there, they would die off.

The X sperm tend to be bigger and slower, so they make it up the tubes after the Y sperm. So if the Ys died and the egg pops later, the Y will be there to fertilize the egg and make a baby girl.

Because of these differences in the X and Y sperm, I think that the idea is that conditions in the mother’s body could prove more favorable to one over the other.

Here’s a funny story: When I was pregnant with my second daughter, the ob/gyn was doing the sonogram and said that he hoped we weren’t trying for a boy and wouldn’t be disappointed because it was another girl. My husband and I said that we were very happy with another girl! Then my ob/gyn said, “Do you know what you need to do if you want a boy?” My husbands eyes lit up and you could tell that he was waiting for some interesting BD pointers My ob/gyn looked straight at me and said, “You need to change husbands!” LOL (This was in Italy. I don’t think a US Dr. would say this). Well, I have kept my husband and we went on to make a third girl!

Here is something to think about:

I am sure that some foods can create a ‘acidy’ or create more of an akaline base in our CM. I know in the Shettle’s method for a girl….

“The pH of the women’s tract is also very important. A more acidic environment favors girls, since it will kill the weaker y-sperms first, leaving a greater quantity of x-sperms available to fertilize the egg. On the other hand, a more alkaline environment favors boys. Shettles recommends a douche of water and vinegar (acid) immediately before intercourse to favor a girl; a douche of water and baking soda (alkaline) will help for a boy.”

So maybe with certain diets, that can create a better enviroment for certain sperm…?

Jenn
——————————————————————————–

MichelleToo
I just had surgery last week, and I laughed so hard reading about the Drs comment to get another husband, Thanks, I needed that, even though it was painful….
——————————————————————————–

ratchet22,
I hope that you are feeling better after your surgery. Yes, I thought I was going to fall off the table laughing. My husband took it pretty well, considering…
But it wasn’t the first time someone in our little Italian village told me what was on their mind. Here’s another laugh for you. One day when I was in the piazza, an older woman stopped to see my girls who were both quite young and 18 months apart. I guess she didn’t think that I had a clue, so she leaned forward and whispered in my ear that I needed to be careful! She added, that there were ways to control baby making. I don’t think that I could respond. I probably just stood there looking at her kind of dazed.
There are many reasons that cause a woman to change her mind and desire more children after a previous sterilization. The desire for more children can happen immediately after tubal ligation or it can happen months or even years later.

Ok I had a HSG done today. I don’t have the “official reports” yet. The doctor said I have about 2 inches on each side.
My type of TL was a fimbriectomy. So do you think I can have a TR?
Thanks
Crystal
Hello! Welcome to the boards. I would suggest sending all reports to DR B for him to review…I dont think an answer can be given unless he is able to see the reports..and for anyone here to say yes or no…would be a non-medical opinion. Here is a link that would have all contact info for Chapel Hill. http://www.tubal-reversal.net/tubal_reversal_scheduling.htm
GOOD LUCK!!!
Of course I can’t give you an answer, but Dr B. does have a page where he talks about reversing a fimbiectomy. If you return to the home page and then click “Reversal Illustration” on the left side, you will see a link at the very bottom of the new page. Good luck!!
Is there a time limit for having a tubal reversed? I had mine done about eight yrs ago.
Anxious…nope no time limit! Send your OR from your TL to Dr B for his review….. the time between my TL and TR was 11 years! There’s ladies here with a greater gap between the two.
GOOD LUCK!

Women who chose Dr. Gary Berger as their tubal reversal doctor discuss how quickly they became pregnant after tubal reversal surgery at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. Many of the patients that have already posted a response received their first positive pregnancy test within 3 months of their tubal reversal surgery.

One patient posted that within 34 months of her tubal reversal surgery with Dr. Berger she had already given birth to two tubal reversal babies and is currently 6 months pregnant with her third tubal reversal baby! This is very encouraging to patients still planning their tubal reversal.

It is different for many people. As for me it did not take long. I had my TR march 31 05 and TR#1 was born the same year in Dec. We got PG again right away with Tr #2 and he was born 13 months after the 1st one. I am now Pg with TR # 3 and she is due in May so if you add it up I had my TR 34 months ago and I have 2 babies and 6 months PG with # 3, so it does work. Wishing you the best.
TR 10-15-07
MC 11-20-07
EP 12-14-07 lost right tube.
We will be trying again after another complete cycle. So in March.
Dr. said after all the trauma of MC and EP I need to wait. My body seriously needs a good long break. He said if I got preg in that next month after the tube removal, it would be a guarantee it wouldn’t go well. Anesthesia, pain meds it was all yucky stuff in my system, my organs being messed with repeatedly….
As you can see I was pregnant 2 weeks after TR.
IF I had to do it all again I would wait at very least a full complete 30 days to TTC and NOT after my 1st period. My first AF was 1 week after TR.
I would wait just to make sure the healing had been complete. The surgery is rough on the body. I still think if I would’ve waited things would’ve turned out better. I was kind of shocked to be BFP so fast. I was still weak and healing. It just wasn’t good for me at all. Basically we cut the stitches and BAM I was BFP.

My personal recommendation is to wait until you feel 100% healed, not good enough or kind of healed… Gwen the tube swelling is a concern I had too.
A full month, not your first AF or even 2 can make a world of difference I think. By 2 months you should be perfect. It’s just my opinion, we’ve been through hell so far TTC. I don’t want to repeat it. For me waiting is best.

I hate waiting, but I want to be sure everything is PERFECT in there!!

I think Miss Khadija is the most I’ve heard of with 3!!! You go girl!!! [Smile]
I can’t wait to be BFP again. Sigh… our wait time is going fast so it’s ok. [Smile]
1 month down, Feb to go. Then try in March!
Everybody is different, I guess it’s go with how you feel and how your body reacts to surgeries and trauma like that during your whole life.
My body likes to take it’s sweet time so I’m listening to it.

Khadija,
My name is Tessa and I was reading your post. You conceived twice without any complications and I think that is wonderful and I hope that is how it works for me. What are your tube lengths? I just had my TR on the 24th, do you think it is too soon to BD? My AF ended yesterday, so in about 6 days I will be ovulating. I am a little unsure if I should wait till after another AF or not. My DH says whatever I want to do, he is ready whenever I am ready. What do you suggest? I understand that the pregnancy outcomes are different for each. Thanks

First pregnancies after tubal reversal have occurred within weeks up to as long as 4 years. I believe that the most children reported to us so far after tubal reversal is four, but there are many women who have had two or three children since their reversals. In my next analysis of the Tubal Reversal Pregnancy Study for 2008, I will take a closer look at this and include information in the report in answer to the question about “tubal ligation reversal how long before pregnancy”.
I could not beleive that I got PG on my first cycle, it has not even been a year sense my TR and I already have a baby [Smile] Dr. Berger is AWESOME!

The question that stimulated this message board discussion was an excellent one. The information about how long it takes to become pregnant after tubal reversal and how many babies patients have had after the reversal can be found by following the links to Pregnancy and Birth Testimonials and the New Pregnancies reports. There are thousands of individual pages of these, and it would take an enormous effort to go through all of these pages on our website. That is why I do a yearly statistical analysis of our patient database and prepare a Tubal Reversal Study Pregnancy Report.

CHAPEL HILL – Dr. Charles W. Monteith completed the first tubal reversal fellowship offered at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. This is the only known fellowship of its kind.

Dr. Gary S. Berger, medical director and world-renowned tubal reversal surgeon, presented the certificate of completion in a private ceremony at the Chapel Hill center.

Monteith began his fellowship training in January 2008, and has assisted in more than 100 tubal reversal procedures under the guidance of Dr. Berger.

“Dr. Monteith’s experience as a gynecologic surgeon and his dedication to achieving the best patient care made him the ideal physician to complete this fellowship program,” said Berger. “He is the first doctor ever to be certified in outpatient tubal ligation reversal surgery. And I welcome him as a colleague at the Tubal Reversal Center.”

As a tubal reversal specialist, Monteith plans to keep tubal reversal surgery a viable option for women wanting to have another baby after tubal ligation surgery.

“I am very fortunate to have been invited into and accepted by the staff and family of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center,” Monteith said. “I feel like I have arrived home.”

Dr. Monteith graduated summa cum laude from Xavier University in Louisiana. He attended medical school at the University of California at San Francisco where he received a Howard Hughes Medical Research Fellowship used to conduct research in molecular genetics.

After completing his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he accepted a clinical assistant professor position with the department of obstetrics and gynecology in 2001. He also served as assistant professor in obstetrics and gynecology at Wake Medical Hospital in Raleigh for seven years where he practiced high-risk obstetrics and advanced surgical gynecology.

“How do I choose a doctor?” Considering the number of choices, it is one of the most important questions to consider before you move forward with planning your tubal reversal surgery. Training, experience, availability, and patient support can vary greatly between doctors and facilities. To help you feel fully informed in your decision, here is a list of questions to ask when considering how to choose a doctor to perform your surgery and the types of responses you should expect.

Question #1: What credentials does the doctor have that demonstrate expertise in tubal reversal surgery?

Answer: You can check on line to see if the doctor is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons. Doctors with both of these credentials are recognized by their peers as experts with the training and experience best suited for tubal reversal surgery. Dr. Berger is a member of both groups and has written dozens of articles on tubal reversal surgery.

Question #2: How many tubal ligation reversals has the doctor performed?

Answer: The more experience the doctor has, the better! Dr. Berger performs 4 tubal reversals everyday, 5 days a week. Having performed more than 5000 tubal ligation reversals, Dr. Berger has the most experience with this outpatient procedure of any reproductive surgeon in the world. Patients come to him from across the US and abroad to have their tubes repaired. He is considered by many to be the best tubal reversal doctor.

Question #3: Does the doctor perform tubal reversals on an outpatient basis?

Answer: The answer to this question should be “yes”, since outpatient surgery not only reduces cost but also avoids risks of hospitalization, such as possible infection with hospital acquired bacteria.

Question #4: What are the doctor’s success rates following tubal reversal surgery, based on the patient’s age and type of tubal ligation?

Answer: The answer to this question should be based on accurate statistical data. If you are 40 and had a monopolar tubal coagulation, you do not want to be quoted the success rate for 23 year olds with tubal ligation by Hulka clips. Ask for information about the outcomes of surgery for women in your age group and with your method of tubal ligation. Ask to see the statistics that the doctor has regarding his patients’ outcomes. At Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center they keep an extensive information database and can give you detailed statistics about pregnancy rates for our patients taking into account age, tubal ligation method, and many other factors. A weekly pregnancy report is also provided on the Tubal Reversal Message Board. In addition, Dr. Berger has completed the most comprehensive study done to date of tubal reversal surgery and its resulting outcomes, showing that for the majority of women who have undergone a tubal ligation procedure and decide later they would like to have more children, tubal reversal surgery is a better option than in vitro fertilization (IVF). At Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, they are committed to providing accurate and up to date information.

Question #5: How long does tubal reversal surgery normally take?

Answer: Tubal reversal performed by Dr. Berger usually takes less than an hour. Minimizing operating time is important, since longer anesthesia and surgery times are associated with increased complication rates and recovery from surgery.

Question #6: Is it better to have my tubal reversal in an outpatient center or a hospital?

Answer: Chapel Hill Surgical Center is a state of the art facility dedicated to tubal reversal surgery and is licensed by the Division of Facility Services of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.Personalized care is easier to ensure in this small private setting than in a large hospital. They have a higher clinical staff to patient ratio than in a hospital, and can concentrate all of their attention on the safety and comfort of tubal reversal patients. The nurses at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center have all obtained certification in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and the anesthesiologists are board certified, which means you will receive the best care possible – and all in the comfort and privacy of the outpatient setting. Hundreds of patient testimonials provide details of the commitment Dr. Berger and his staff have made to patient safety and comfort.

Question #7: What is the expected recovery time following tubal reversal?

Answer: Although everyone recovers at a different rate, most patients are able to return to work and other normal activities within 5 to 10 days. Dr. Berger allows patients to begin trying to conceive as soon as they have a period following surgery.

Question #8: Will you be following up with me to assist me when I have questions or concerns following my tubal reversal? Will there be any charges for my follow-up care?

Answer: Dr. Berger and the nursing staff at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center will be available for on-going support and information to help you conceive as well as to monitor your early pregnancy. There is no additional cost for this follow-up care.
