Can A Vasectomy Reversal Be Done?
Frequently, many individuals find themselves faced with a sitation where they either need or want to have their snip reversed because they have have another partner or they wish to have another child. A reversal of their vasectomy is the answer.
The reversal of vasectomy is usually performed by a consultant urological surgeon who usually uses a microscope to perform the surgery. The reversal of vasectomy operation is performed under a general anaesthetic so that the patient is still and so that the surgeon can best operate using the microscope but usually, the anaesthetic is light enough for return home the same day or ealy the next day.
There are several questions that need to asked when choosing your consultant urologist, some which you may want to ask him directly with respect to his experience of reversing vasectomies.
The frequency with which he performs this operation directly affects the outcome of the operation. You can have one urological surgeon who only does 2 or 3 a every couple of months or another who performs several each week. Ask the question because if vasectomy reversals are performed on a regular basis then improvement follows. Most surgeons have to self audit their results which indicate how skilled they are. Just as with any skill, practice make perfect. Also make sure that you know exactly who is performing the procedure. If you have sought confidence in a particular surgeon, you do not want to find that another performs the operation.
How successful the operation is depends upon the number of live sperm, not fertilization. A successful urologist will have a success rate of around 90% or so. Occasionally, whilst the rejoining is successful, after a 3 month period, no living sperm are seen. This could be due to the length of time since the original vasectomy, it is not always the case. Various studies say that those men seeking a vasectomy reversal have a greater chance of success if the original vasectomy was less than 10 years ago. Beyond that time frame the success rate can drop considerably.
Reversing a vasectomy does not mean that pregnancy will follow. Pregnancy is dependant on the woman’s age and whether she has had previous children. Therefore, the best time to have the operation is a soon as possible. A good urological surgeon will try and ensure that you do not have to wait too long for surgery so please ask him what his waiting lists are like. A long list does not necessarily mean a better surgeon. If having found your surgeon you find you have to travel many miles
